12 folk dances in Swiss style with Haikus by Stefan Blankertz
For 2 flutes and Piano
Folk music for the flute
The transverse flute rarely appears in Swiss folk music. This may be due to the apparent contrast between the instrument, which is focused on virtuosity and elegance, and the simple rhythm and rather simple melodies of this folk music. The present twelve folk dances in the Swiss style for two flutes and piano, which are based thematically and melodically on the twelve months, attempt to overcome this apparent contradiction.
Each dance is accompanied by a haiku, a Japanese form of poetry, which, like a breeze, describes a content. They are simple, deep in content and, like the dances, are thematically based on the individual months. This creates a musical-literary field of tension between music and language.
After the 26 folk dances from Hanny Christen's collection, where the first flute was taken over unchanged, this time everything has been composed by the author.
