Moonlit Night
Robert Schumann (1810 – 1856)
Moonlit Night
“Moonlit Night,” based on a poem by Joseph von Eichendorff, sketches a Romantic vision in just a few images: heaven and earth touch, nature becomes inward feeling—until the soul “spreads its wings wide” and “as if it were flying home.” Robert Schumann captures this mood in a floating, seemingly simple melody and a piano part full of quiet shades of color.
This is an arrangement for flute and piano.

The year 1840 entered Robert Schumann’s biography as his so-called “year of song”; during that year he composed about half of his entire output of Lieder. Before then, he had written almost exclusively piano music and only a few songs. This period also includes “Mondnacht,” after a poem by Joseph von Eichendorff: the song is No. 5 of the Liederkreis, Op. 39 (1840). The poem links nocturnal images of nature with an inner, emotional experience.
Moonlit Night
Joseph von Eichendorff
It was as if the sky
Had softly kissed the earth,
So that, in the shimmer of blossoms,
She now had to dream of him.
The air passed through the fields,
The ears of grain swayed gently,
The forests rustled softly—
So star-clear was the night.
And my soul stretched
Its wings wide,
Flew through the quiet lands,
As if it were flying home.
